This nugget ice maker is more than a pretty face. It produces 38 pounds of nugget ice each day, and comes with great features like self-cleaning and WIFI remote control.
The Price of the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker 2.0 is about $500. It’s pricey, but it does come with some great features.
First, the design of the Opal 2.0 is fantastic. It’s stainless steel (light or dark) and has a pull-out ice bin that’s backlit. It really is a sharp-looking portable ice maker.
The Opal produces 38 pounds of ice each day and produces nugget ice in about 10 minutes.
The Opal also comes with WIFI, which allows you to dim or turn off the ice bin light, schedule when the ice maker turns on and off, and give you the status of the unit.
I love that this ice maker will automatically turn back on when the ice melts or water is added. This is important because it means you’ll always have ice available when it’s needed.
Newair Nugget Ice Maker
The Newair Nugget Ice Maker is also an elegant-looking portable ice maker. It’s wrapped in stainless steel with a plastic lid and top. The Newair nugget ice maker costs about $299, which is an affordable price for those who want a nugget ice maker for their home.
The Newair Nugget Ice Maker is claimed to be the fastest nugget ice maker on the market today producing nugget ice in only 5 minutes. It produces a lot of nugget ice as well – 42 to 48 pounds of nugget ice daily.

The Newair nugget ice maker doesn’t have as many features as the Opal 2.0, but it is a solid ice maker that makes a lot of ice. It has a self-cleaning feature (like the Opal) and is completely controlled by a single button on the front of the unit.
All you have to do is press and hold that button for cleaning mode, and a single tap turns on the machine, and the same for turning it off.
The nugget ice is soft and chewable and is perfect for chilling all kinds of beverages.
The one feature that I believe is missing from the Newair Nugget Ice Maker is the auto-on. When the ice maker fills with ice and melts, the ice maker will not begin automatically. You have to manually turn it back on. The result is usually no ice when you want it.
Should I Buy the Opal or the Newair Nugget Ice Maker?
Both of these portable ice makers are awesome. I used them both for a while and really enjoyed the ice these units produced. The one you should buy is based on your home needs. Do you want an ice maker with many features but costs $500, or a more simple design that only costs $300?
The Newair makes more nugget ice per day but is a louder ice maker. The Opal has WIFI and a pull-out ice bin with a backlight. You have to choose what works best for you and your home.
You cannot go wrong buying either one of these machines. I personally decided to purchase the Newair Nugget Ice Maker based on the price because I wouldn’t use the WIFI feature. I just felt that I would pay extra for features I wouldn’t use.
Yet, both the Opal and the Newair are great nugget portable ice makers that will provide great nugget ice for your home.
